Unique accessibility application that create audible “line of sight” as you move around busy outdoor surroundings

overTHERE helps legally blind individuals explore and interact with the surrounding environment by using virtual audible signs.
The app grew out of Smith-Kettlewell’s Virtual Talking Signs Project.

Our proof of concept premiered at the Bay Area Makeathon (September 11-13, 2015), where it was recognized with the event’s "Improved Mobility" Award.

overTHERE was developed in close collaboration with Dr. Joshua Miele, a prominent accessibility researcher at The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco.

Aim and Accuracy

tune sound while searching

Search for the signs is a little like tuning an old radio, with each sign being clear when you point straight at it, and getting staticky soothing noise as you point away from it.
This helps indicate exactly where the app thinks the signs are.
A frequent buzzing noise means that the app location information may be unreliable at particular moment.
NOTE: if buzzing noise occurs frequently, go to Calibration section for more troubleshooting details.

Limitations

the app is not a silver bullet

overTHERE is intended for outdoor use only.
It is designed to convey information about the locations of things around you.
It only tells you about things that Google knows about in your immediate neighborhood, and not all nearby signs will be visible from any given location.
Sometimes when locations are too close to your position -nearby, the app does not report them because it is impossible to determine their direction.
There may also be signs nearby that are being partially or completely blocked by other signs that are closer to you.

About

History of overTHERE development

overTHERE is result of successful partnership between Founder of LABS 301, Dmitrijs Prohorenkovs, and Head Researcher of Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, Joshua Miele.

They met at San Francisco Bay Area Makeathon for disability in September 2015, passionate and motivated to create modern interactive orientation solution for visually impaired people.

It was a startpoint of long serie of experiments for Virtual Talking Signs Project.

This application demonstrates the power of non-visual, augmented-reality interface enhanced with Audible reality signs.
